Many environmental issues affect the North Pickering federal lands. Our work overlaps with other groups as we all work towards a greener tomorrow. ****************************** Durham Election 2010 was created by citizens who believe that great opportunities to improve the environment exist at the local level.They intend to identify candidates who share environmental ideals and will implement a much greener agenda in 2010, thereby making the environment the #1 issue in the election. The Green Door Alliance is a Durham Region environmental think tank with a general interest in conservation land use, specifically the 30 square miles of federal and provincial public lands at Pickering.
Ontario Greenbelt Alliance is an effective watchdog for the Greenbelt, having over 80 members. Earthroots is a grassroots environmental organization dedicated to protecting Ontario's wilderness, wildlife and watersheds through research, education and action. Greenforlife Inc is a Toronto based company that sources eco-safe products and solutions for the home, school and workplace. Their goal is to raise awareness through education on green practices and sustainable living choices. Environmental Defence protects the environment and human health. We research solutions. We educate. We go to court when we have to. Ontario Centre for Evironmental Technology Advancement provides a range of business and technical services to support Ontario-based entrepreneurs and start-up companies with commercializing new environmental, energy and clean technologies. The York Region Environment Alliance (YREA) was initially formed in 1999 to campaign against the cosmetic use of pesticides. Since that time, YREA has continually expanded its mandate to address ecological issues that impact our health and the health of our environment. The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust has been established to conserve and protect natural spaces across the Moraine. Friends of the Rouge Watershed works with youth and community to protect, enhance and restore ecosystem beauty, health and integrity. The Toronto and Area Region Conservation Association helps people understand, enjoy and look after the natural environment. With its members associations, including Durham, the TRCA works to ensure healthy rivers and shorelines, greenspace and biodiversity, and sustainable communities. The Pembina Institute's Sustainable Energy Solutions and Green Economics promote fiscal policies for environmental objectives among civil society and public-policy decision-makers. Sustainability Network works with environmental non-profits to make them more effective and efficient. Ontario Environment Network connects with over 500 environmental groups in Ontario to increase awareness of these organizations and encourage discussions and means to protect the environment. The Durham Land Stewardship Council works together with the stakeholders of Durham Region through proactive stewardship supporting ecological sustainability for present and future generations. The Toronto Environmental Alliance’s mandate is to promote a greener Toronto, encouraging the participation of local people on local issues. The Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario promotes ecological agriculture and educates the public on topics ranging from green manures to livestock, healthy water and soils. An e-zine featuring dialogue on emerging food systems, with articles on topics such as urban agriculture, small local farms and the role of women in developing nations in fighting climate change. The Durham Region Food Charter is a document that outlines the values and beliefs about food in our community in order to promote their food systems to benefit residents and the environment. This website is dedicated to protecting Markham's quality of life through growing the Greenbelt, protecting foodlands and stopping urban sprawl. The Durham Farm Fresh Marketing Association encourages consumers to purchase produce fresh from the farm. These producers often sell their products from the field or greenhouse at the farm gate, reducing long distance transportation and guaranteeing a fresh final product. Community Supported Agriculture: Ontario Directory Canadian Organic Growers – Durham Chapter is an education and networking organization representing farmers, gardeners and consumers, based in Bowmanville. The Stop Community Food Centre strives to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds community and challenges inequality. The Toronto Food Policy Council partners with business and community groups to develop policies and programs promoting food security. Our aim is a food system that fosters equitable food access, nutrition, community development and environmental health. The Ontario Farmland Trust is dedicated to protecting farmland and farming in Ontario. We borrowed the name for this section from www.airportwatch.org.uk, a British umbrella movement uniting environmental organisations, airport community groups, and individuals opposed to unsustainable aviation expansion. It speaks to a growing global movement to limit the loss of farmland, greenspace and communities to expanding airports, as well as to reduce the noise and pollution associated with air traffic. The following links will enable interested citizens to monitor the debate for and against the proposed airport in Pickering through various stakeholders, including levels of government, airports, groups lobbying for and against, and of course, the GTAA itself. The two ministers with the most power over the disposition of these lands, and therefore the key politicians to contact are: Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, whose riding is immediately east of the lands in question, and Transport Minister John Baird. ** Local MP Mark Holland is a strong voice against the airport and in favour of protecting the lands under some form of land trust. Provincial Government Region of Durham York Region Several Municipal Governments are affected by the federal lands. A small pocket, currently protected as Green Space, extends into Uxbridge, while a larger section of farmland to the west juts into Markham-Stouffville.
