Even if the industry implements its "climate plan", it will still consume one fifth of our global carbon budget.CarbonBrief

Via confirms proposed rail route
Publication Date: July 20, 2017
Tags: Environment
Will passenger trains again run through the remaining Federal Lands? VIA Rail confirms that it plans to use the "Highway 7"-ish rail corridor for its planned high frequency rail (HFR) service. VIA's Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal lakeshore route is increasingly congested, competing with more-frequent GO trains and CN's flourishing intermodal (truck-trailer/sea-going container piggyback) business, negatively affecting passenger volumes and on-time performance. Significantly cheaper than high speed rail (HSR), VIA says its HFR proposal, targeting car drivers by running a new fleet of trains every hour or so on a passenger-train-only track, provides 2/3 of the benefit of HSR at 1/3 of the cost. Toronto to Ottawa would take 2-1/2 hours; Toronto to Montreal an hour faster than current VIA service. HSR proponents ridicule the proposal, saying HFR will be using 21st century infrastructure and equipment to run at 1976 speeds. Transport Canada is studying VIA's proposal.thewhig.com
