A passionate new Land Over Landings supporter has launched a petition asking Ottawa to finally end any plans to build an airport on the prime — and increasingly precious — farmland of North Pickering. In case you thought this was settled long ago, and that no one would be crazy enough to suggest a new […]

INDOOR FARMING AND NORTH PICKERING
Local politicians have for years extolled indoor farms as desirable elements of a future airport on the Federal Lands, no doubt banking on the idea that by incorporating such facilities into the project, they would silence objections to the destruction of prime farmland. The paper reveals how misguided such thinking is. “Indoor Farming and North […]
KPMG FINDS NO AIRPORT NEEDED
Back in 2016, Transport Canada tasked KPMG with analysing the airport system of southern Ontario to the year 2036. An up-to-date study was said to be needed to decide when airport capacity constraints would necessitate a Pickering airport. KPMG’s findings were submitted in sections, over 3 years. The full report was released without fanfare by Transport Canada on March 5, 2020. We broke it down.
PICKERING COUNCILLOR URGES CITY TO FORGET AIRPORT, FOCUS ON RAIL
Even in these strange times, winter slowly, inexorably drips into spring on the Federal Lands. So, too, grinds on the business of government as any possibility of an airport – or aerotropolis – on the Lands fades away to nothing.
BREAKING! NO BUSINESS CASE TO SUPPORT AIRPORT ON THE PICKERING FEDERAL LANDS — KPMG study.
Transport Canada’s KPMG report about the future needs of the southern Ontario airport system was released on March 5, 2020. After a three-year-long study, the KPMG consultants concluded that there’s no need for the immediate development of an airport on the Pickering Federal Lands: “Although all four scenarios identify minor capacity deficits, these can be overcome with modest expansions in aircraft apron and air terminal facilities at the airports in the southern Ontario airport system. Therefore, a new airport is not expected to be required in southern Ontario prior to 2036 to meet the forecast demand.”

NEW! AIRPORTS AND POLLUTION, ZOOMING IN ON PICKERING
Our research paper “Airports and Pollution: Environmental Consequences of an Airport on the Pickering Federal Lands” looks at aviation-caused pollution and its effects. It shows why aviation’s plans for emissions reduction are doomed to fail; the pollution a Pickering airport would introduce to the Lands, national park, and wider community; and explains why a “green airport” is an oxymoron. It’s an eye-opener.
